How to Pick the Most Reliable Component in a Few Weeks

The sight of bulged and leaking electrolytic capacitors (e-caps) is enough to give even the most composed of us heartburn. Loss of capacitance and spiking equivalent series resistance may only be the start of the problem...viscous conductive electrolyte leaking onto a motherboard or power supply can cause a host of other failures.

 

E-caps primarily wear-out by electrolyte evaporation, a mechanism that is dependent upon the circuit stresses, use environment, and package construction. Manufacturers claim rated lifetimes of 1,000 to 10,000 hours under specific test conditions. Our experience at DfR Solutions tells us it can take up to 3x as long to observe failures. Taking 12 to 36 weeks to confirm e-cap rated lifetimes is too long and too expensive to qualify passive components.
