Improved product quality using HyperLynx PI

The Situation

Westermo's R&D division is constantly working to move the boundries of what is technically possible for industrial date communication equipment. While it is important to be at the forefront of technology development, it is alo crucial to ensure highest quality at all levels. 

Their products are smaller then any of their competitors and therefore they use High Density Interconnect PCB boards, using micro-via's and lots of layers. This means there is limited space for their Power rails. The low voltage CPU's draw large current and they need to guarantee the voltage requirements at the Pin. 

The Solution

HyperLynx PI (Power Integrity) can analyze the DC drop and AC characteristics of a PCB board. 

With the DC Drop part of the tool the voltage drop from the Power supply to device pin can be found. This cannot be done by measurements because you cannot measure under large BGA chips. They were also able to signify improve the Plane impedance using the AC analysis part of the tool.

The Results

At Westermo we make the best products. Using HyperLynx PI we can test against the worst-case scenario and add our own extra margins to it. Also we don't need to use the EMC labs as often as we did because we can simulate instead of building prototypes and measure afterwards. So time to market decreased.

We also use HyperLynx SI for Signal Integrity Analysis but Power Integrity is clearer to see than the SI part. Both tools are very helpful.

But for sure we are able to improve our already high product quality and reduce our design time.
